    If you want to see the traps on this level, hover your mouse over SHOW TRAPS.

    Did I miss anything on this map or haven't included something in the description? If so, then please let me know.

    This is where you start the game - locked up in a cell in a prison of some mad mage who likes to put experiments on you and talks of your "Potential".

1. Jail Cells*

    After seeing the cut scene of the compound being assaulted by some thieves, you get rescued by Imoen who opens your cell and sets you free. At this point you can recruit her into your party (Do you get any XP for that ???) or let her down and begin your adventure alone.
    In the cells just north of yours you can find Jaheira and Minsc. To open Jaheira's cell you'll need a Jail Cell Key that you can find in the Jailkeeper Golem room.
    To set the valiant ranger Minsc (and his Space Hamster Boo) free you'll need to use some trickery. Remember that he has trouble with keeping a lid on his steam, so you should enrage him by taunting until he bends the bars of his cell. Minsc will eventually realise that this was a clever ploy and will offer to join your party. Beware, that if you make too much fun of Boo, Minsc will get upset and will not join the party.

JAHEIRA JOINS: 3000 exp;
MINSC JOINS: 3000 exp.
Q: Do you get XP for recruiting Imoen???

2. The Jailkeeper Golem Room

    This room is where you find the Jail Cell Key necessary to open Jaheira's cell. This room is "guarded"  by a Jailkeeper Golem - a mindless construct obeying orders. Fortunately for you he was not instructed to stop you from escaping, so just keeps saying that you should get back to your cells. Yeah ... right! You can quiz him on who his Master is but, unfortunately, he wasn't instructed to tell that either. So just loot the room, equip your party members and move on.
    Beware, the painting on the wall is trapped. However, Imoen can disarm the trap and lockpick it too.

    Check out the table, chest and a trapped painting for some starting gear.
DISARM THE TRAP: 1750 exp;
PICK THE LOCK: 400 exp;
LOOT: Jail Cell Key, Dagger +1, (3) Potion of Healing, Long Sword, Katana, Short Sword, Quarter Staff, Battle Axe, Spear, Two Handed Sword, Halberd, War Hammer, Helmet, Studded Leather Armor, Splint Mail, Buckler, Leather Armor, Small Shield, Chain Mail Armor.
NOTE: If you have imported your character from Baldur's Gate I, you shall also find some of your equipment in this room.

3. Buzzing Electrical Machine

    You get warned of the impeding danger when you approach this chamber. There is a machine that spouts lightning bolts at you and when they hit the wall the bolt spawns a Lightning Mephit. You can see a cable on the floor that runs to a control panel to the east and two dead thieves on the floor. Click on the panel to turn the machine off. Kill the Lightning Mephit(s) and continue on.

SHUT DOWN THE MACHINE: 2000 exp;
LIGHTNING MEPHIT: 420 exp.

4. Aataqah

    Once you enter this room with strange crystals and pools, you will be hailed by Aataqah. He wonders if you will answer a question of his. If you say that you "don't know" or "refuse to answer that question" he will simply vanish and you will get no reward. If you agree to answer his question you will have another two choices. The question is the following:
    You and your sibling are locked up in separate cells, unable to communicate. The mage responsible appears and explains: In each cell there is a magical button. If one of you presses the button and the other does not, then whoever pressed the button dies and the other one is set free. If both of you press the button - both of you die. If both of you do not press the button - both of you still die. You have "one turn of the hourglass to decide your action".
    If you chose the Noble path and pressed the button, Aataqah shall summon an Ogre Mage.
    If you chose the path of a Coward and did not press the button, Aataqah shall summon four Gibberlings.
    In both cases you shall get the experience for answering the question and get healed before battle, however Noble path yields the  treasure and experience from an Ogre Mage and you get no experience for slaying Gibberlings.
    Regardless of how you answered the question Aataqah tells you to seek out Rielev somewhere in the prison and offer him release.

ANSWER THE QUESTION: 3500 exp;
OGRE MAGE: 650 exp;
LOOT (OGRE MAGE): 20 Gold, Bastard Sword.

5. Room with the Tanks

    There are some tanks with the creatures that you can revive once you have the energy cells from Rielev. They can't hear you at all but, nonetheless, can give you general hints about this prison level. In particular, they'll give hints about the Jail Cell Key, the Mistresses room and a djinni coiled within a bottle in the Air Elemental Level and that you would need the Air Elemental Statue to get there.
    Other than that, kill the Mephits and raid the boxes.

    Check out the two boxes and a barrel. Watch out though, one box is trapped.
DISARM THE TRAP: 1750 exp;
PICK THE LOCK: 400 exp;
LOOT: Quarter Staff +1, 1 Gold, (5) Arrows, Short Bow, ( 6) Bullets.

    This is a room with a Sewage Golem. It is "guarded" by a Radiant Mephit that casts color spray, so watch out. The Sewage Golem has been instructed to maintain order in the Sewers and has the Sewage Golem Key necessary to open some doors. You can pickpocket him to get the key or try to trick him by telling him that you are his Master. If you do the latter, Golem will inform you that in order to perform his duties he needs to be activated and that the Activation Stone lies on a table in Rielev's room. How you do this is up to you, but activating the golem actually yields experience, while stealing the key doesn't.

    Check out the tables, bookcase and a locked chest for treasure.

8. Rielev

    Here you can find a tortured soul by the name Rielev that Aataqah has told you to seek out. He craves escape from his "eternal life" in suspended animation. If you choose to help him and remove the crystals that power his tube, you get Energy Cells that you can use on the Tortured Ones over at the room with tanks, in order to be able to talk to them. Should you choose not to release Rielev, Imoen will do it for you and you will get no experience for this.
    Rielev shall actually mention the name of your captor - Irenicus.

    Check the table and a barrel.

9. Sewer

    The Sewer is guarded by an ugly creature called Otyugh ... ugh indeed. If it hits you, you get slowed down and diseased, so watch out. The best way to defeat it is to get a long stick, something like an 11 foot pole, err...I mean the Quarter Staff +1 that you find in the room with tanks, and pummel it from a distance so that it can't reach you. Grab the Wand of Frost Key off its corpse once it's dead.
    With the guardian dispatched it is time to raid the area.

    Check out the three chests, one of them is trapped while the other two are locked.

Here you shall find plenty (as for the beginning of the game) of quest and magic items. Don't forget to grab the Wand of Lightning Key - you'll need it on the next level, and the Air Elemental Statue - you'll need it to get access to the Air Elemental Level.

They ask you to set them free by retrieving their acorns from a duergar named Ilyich and bringing them to the Fairy Queen in Windspear Hills. For accepting their quest and actually bringing the acorns from Ilyich, your party will be rewarded with lots of experience. Moreover, the Dryads will tell you how to escape - look for the Portal key that is hidden in Mistress' Bedroom.
    They will also help you to solve the quest with the Genie on the Air Elemental Level, by giving you his real flask.

15. Ilyich the Duergar

    Ilyich and his duergar henchmen are somewhat nasty for the beginning party. So my advice would be to haste your party or drink an Oil of Speed. Then these guys can be taken down without major problems. After you have cleaned the room, return Acorns to the Dryads to get the experience reward.
